Paydays and holidays

Plan ahead and mark these dates on your calendar for when the university closes to observe the various holidays. Twelve-month faculty and classified staff observe the holiday schedule below. Nine-month faculty observe the same holidays as students; they do not accrue holiday time. VCU’s holiday schedule includes any additional holiday time granted by the governor.

Four hours of holiday leave has been granted by the Governor for the Thanksgiving observance for eligible employees. Employees who wish to take the whole day must use four hours of appropriate eligible leave to account for an eight-hour work day. VCU's 2016-2017 winter closing (Dec. 23, 2016 through Jan. 2, 2017) requires no additional hours for which eligible faculty and staff must take leave, with or without pay, to cover the time away from work. If the Governor grants additional holiday leave, any additional hours will be designated as "float" holiday hours to be used within 12 months of the date(s) of accrual. Jan. 2, 2017 (New Year's Day observed) is part of VCU's 2017 holiday calendar. VCU resumes normal business operations on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017. The holiday schedule above does not apply to VCU Health employees, as those employees are covered by their Paid Time Off (PTO) program that combines annual, sick and holiday leave.

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day

  • Memorial Day
    May 29, 2017

    Nov. 22 (4 hours leave granted), Nov. 23 and 24, 2017
  • Winter closing
    Dec. 20, 2017 through Jan. 1, 2018

The 2017-18 winter break requires 4 additional hours for which eligible faculty and staff must take leave to cover the time away from work. Employees have been granted four hours of leave for December 20 and must use an additional four hours of their own personal or annual leave to cover the rest of the day (VCU will be closed the entire day December 20, 2017). This calendar is subject to revisions.

For 2017 the Governor has again granted additional holiday leave as follows:

  • 8 hours on Monday, July 3, 2017 (moved to Thursday, Dec. 21, 2017)
  • 4 hours on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017 (the day before Thanksgiving)
  • 4 hours on Friday, Dec. 22, 2017 (moved to Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017)
  • 8 hours on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2017

Please note that Monday, Dec. 25, 2016 is a state holiday (Christmas Day observed) and now part of VCU’s 2017 winter closing. Following past practice, we moved four state holidays to the 2017 winter closing as VCU remains open on these days:

  • Jan. 13:  Lee-Jackson Day (moved to Friday, Dec. 22)
  • Feb. 20:  George Washington Day (moved to Wednesday, Dec. 27)
  • Oct. 9:  Columbus Day (moved to Thursday, Dec. 28)
  • Nov. 10:  Veterans Day (moved to Friday, Dec. 29)

*Additional time off is granted by the Governor for eligible employees. When additional time off is only 4 hours, employees must use 4 hours of appropriate eligible leave if they wish to take the entire day off. If the Governor grants additional holiday leave, any additional hours will be designated as “float” holiday hours to be used within 12 months of the date(s) of accrual.
