Eligibility and availability of leave

The amount of paid leave for which employees are eligible is based on their length of employment with the university. Length of service is determined by one’s leave service date, which includes credit for all periods of full-time and part-time salaried state service, including non-continuous service, except for periods of leave without pay exceeding 14 days. It does not include hourly employment or service for any non-state entity. Years of service with the VCU Health System prior to 1997 may be counted toward the leave service date.

Employees are granted higher leave banks at the beginning of the new leave year (January 10th.) For example, an employee with an anniversary date of September 25, 2015, will have four years of service as of September 25, 2019. The employee will begin accruing leave at a higher rate (and will, therefore, be granted more leave in the available leave bank) on January 10, 2020, the start of the leave year following the service anniversary.
