Flexible Work Arrangements

Flexible work arrangements (FWAs) are part of what makes VCU a great place to work. By leveraging modern technology and approaching our work with an innovative mindset, many VCU employees are able to effectively work a hybrid or remote schedule. It is important to note that flexible work arrangements are based on a combination of factors such as business needs, employee performance, position requirements, and team dynamics.

Managers are encouraged to support FWAs. The guidelines contained on this page and in the Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA) Guide set forth important information about different types of FWAs and things to consider when creating or modifying a FWA.

Determining Eligibility for Remote Work

FWA options are designed to balance the need to support the university mission and in-person experience, the unique needs of each school/college and department, various roles and job requirements, and well-being and equity for all university staff. Once a manager receives a request for a FWA, the manager, in consultation with an HR Professional, should thoroughly analyze the appropriateness of whether an employee should have a FWA and consider the following:

  • the employee’s position description and responsibilities; and
  • the employee’s ability to successfully perform with a FWA.
