This two-part course is designed for managers. The focus is on building an approach to feedback that shines a light on employee excellence as well as methods for efficacious, constructive feedback. Participants must attend both parts of the course in order to get credit.
VCU HR has developed "Appreciation at Work" facilitated sessions based on the book “The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace” by Gary Chapman and Paul White. Staff and faculty who attend these sessions will know the languages of appreciation in the workplace; understand the core concepts of appreciation; and be able to build and maintain good working relationships.
In this hands-on workshop with VCU HR facilitators, participants will practice creating or updating their career development plan using the career pathing tool. You will have the opportunity to: 1. Discuss the intersection between a career path and a career development plan 2. Practice using a career path framework to create or update an individualized career development plan 3. Leverage the facilitators as a resource.

Management Basics: One on One Supervision Meetings
As outlined in the culture of care and appreciation, managers guide and support employees in their career development. The culture of care and appreciation also states that managers ensure all team members are considered and included. One of the ways managers provide guidance, support, and inclusion to their employees is through one-on-one supervision meetings. One-on-one supervision meetings are an essential management tool. This course will provide you with resources to conduct effective and productive meetings with your employees.
Manager Orientation (MO) is primarily for managers who are either new to VCU, new to managing, or both. However, any manager is welcome to attend no matter how long they’ve been in a management role.
The orientation is a three-hour event during which you will meet other managers, build your professional community, and learn more about leading and managing in the VCU culture.
Understanding Your Change Style - Virtual Workshop
This 90-minute workshop uses an assessment to discover your natural individual change style preferences. Learn to leverage your change strengths and see your blind spots to collaborate more effectively in times of change.
